It seems most people think that “ pressure - treated ” is “ pressure - treated. The reality is that not only are there several different “ grades ,” of pressure treated materials, there are different types of chemicals that can be used to treat the wood as well. So the general rule of thumb for lumber grades is this: the lower the number, the more strength and better appearance. To start, pressure - treated wood is softwood lumber. Most builders and remodelers use pressure treated lumber to build exterior decks, and the AWPA standard effectively matches retention to where in the structure the wood is used.
