Painting without tape

I paint all the time and can attest to the wisdom of painting without tape. Tape has to be very secure in order not to allow bleeding through. Frog tape is a great alternative to painter’s tape and I think works even just a little bit better! Because ceilings tend to have more texture, I do use the cutting in method with a good brush for the top of the walls.

I don’t always use a drop cloth to protect the floors, I rarely wear paint clothes, and I never bother with painters tape. Take your clean, angled brush, load it up with paint , and rest it gently close to the edge you want to paint. Make sure it doesn’t glop too much. Believe it or not, it is actually pretty easy to paint walls up to the ceiling and around woodwork… without using masking ( painter ’s) tape ! There is a simple technique involved called “cutting in”. If your wall needs a fresh coating of paint and you need to paint on edges, you can do it easily without tape.

The usual solution to paint edges without smudging the next surface is to apply tape along the sides. You may paint a straight line or free. The solution is to let the paint dry completely. Then score the edge of the tape with a putty knife before you pull it off.
