Western hemlock is moderately light in weight and moderate in strength. It is moderate in its hardness, stiffness, and shock resistance. It has moderately large shrinkage, about the same as Douglas-fir.

Green hemlock lumber contains considerably more water than Douglas-fir, and requires longer kiln drying time. The wood of western hemlock weighs more (about pounds per cubic foot, dry) than that of its eastern relative. You can work hemlock easily with hand or power tools. Currently, the species is threatened by the hemlock woolly adelgi a non-native insect that kills infested trees.
In fact, all parts of the plant are toxic. Hemlock boards weather so well that they do not need any chemical treatment to preserve them. This natural ability to withstand the elements without rotting and decaying also helps protect our planet by eliminating the need for harsh chemical preservatives.
These boards also do not warp and will look great for a long time. Hemlock sands well and accepts wood stain, but as a softwoo it requires special care to ward off blotchiness. The boards have been milled to 1xsize.
