The black wire (hot wire ) coming in from the left is the source power. It is tied together with a wire going to the switch and the black wire going to the outlet. The red wire (switched hot wire ) going to the outlet , wires into the other side of the switch and the white wires (neutral), tie together to complete the return side of the circuit.


Electrical outlets in the United States come in 110-volt with three wires: a black power wire , a white neutral wire and a green or bare grounding wire. Outlets come in many styles and colors, but all outlets operate with the same basic principles. You will find wires on switched outlets , most likely in a bedroom or living room. If the tab is broken off, you can connect the upper and lower outlets to separate wires and control them independently. If the receptacle is wired to the end of a series of receptacles, it usually has only two wires , and possibly a third ground wire.
