How to layer rugs

How to layer rugs

Solid cow hide over neutral rug. Zebra-print rug over any other rug. Small, identical rugs layered over top of each other. We layer blankets on our beds and we layer our clothes, but not until recently did we start to layer our rugs.

Layer upon layer upon layer. Innovative and adventurous designers have shown us that layering rugs can actually be beautiful and add a lot of dimension to a room. If you’re working with a smaller space, layering an accent rug directly on top of a larger area rug can provide depth while creating a distinct focal area, which makes this technique ideal for a living area filled with plenty of seating options. Rug Safety Place a non-slip rug- to -carpet gripper or pad under the base rug to keep the rug in place and protect the carpet underneath.

Use double-sided rug tape on upper rug layers to help keep them from moving. Anchor area rugs by placing their edges under heavier furniture pieces. For me to use one large Aubusson rug here would have been cost prohibitive.

Next I have some furry hide rugs. They are small and one is not big enough to use under the table. They had to be layered to be large enough to work. I hope that gave you some ideas about how to layer rugs and why you might want to. If you have a fairly neutral room, you may want to consider popping a color to break up the monotony of the space.

They give the room a layered , lived-in feel that’s inviting and relaxing. Creates a Focal Point Placing a smaller rug over a larger one draws more attention to the area surrounding the small rug. So, I went to the web to find a solution.

There weren’t a lot of options! I was honestly surprised because I thought that this would be a common problem since layered rugs are popular right now. Choose complementary colours or patterns – think a neutral cowhide layered over a jute base or a collection of Persian rugs in similar tones.

Mix textures for contrast. Try a flat-weave rug over a plush fringed mat, or a sheepskin over a traditional wool rug. Natural rugs such as sea grass, sisal, or jute work best as a base layer placed under something more decorative.

Plus, these types of rugs are normally inexpensive. Add a rug with a high pile or bright pattern to finish off your look. Buy a larger sisal or jute rug (large enough that furniture sits on top as I told you here) and layer your smaller printed rug on top of the sisal. About the layering rugs , though … it looks really cute, but wouldn’t be practical in our kid and pet filled home! Sea grass, sisal and other natural rugs are a great option because they can be very inexpensive.

Look for rug pads that are specifically for use over carpets or try double-sided carpet tape. Both work well when trying to combat creeping. Although it might not be intuitive to add more rugs to a space for fear of a cramped and crowded look, when done properly, layering multiple rugs can add major style points to your home.

Sheepskins and natural hides are a great way to do this. I am absolutely obsessed with the look that Blair from Fox and She created in the space below. If the bottom rug is super delicate and the underside of the top rug is somehow rough or bound in a particular way, I suppose there’s a possibility that extended wear might occur on the bottom rug. Simply put… be careful layering anything on top of Grandma’s antique kilim.

Well, when it comes to rugs , it has been on trend to layer up, and we have our selects to achieve the look with flair. When it comes to interiors, what happens underfoot can often be overlooked for the showier items. As a general rule, the only time smaller rugs or runners work well with big rugs is if the larger rug occupies the entire room, almost acting like wall-to-wall carpeting.

What tends to be most successful is a larger neutral rug as the base layer and a patterned or textured rug on top of it. I layered the rugs in this design to tie together the black tones that recur throughout the space. By perfectly matching the corners of the top rug to the edges of the bottom one, the pieces read as one unit.

Vintage rugs and modern rugs add a perfect eclectic vibe and serve as a great focal point. Similar patterns create a coherent look. It doesn’t always have to be all about contrast, and you can master the art of subtly layering the rugs if you stick to one style. Placing a smaller expensive rug on a large natural fiber rug (which are relatively inexpensive) can save you almost half the price. When done well, layering rugs can easily add color, texture, and definition to a room, and since nothing looks cozier than a beautiful rug on the floor – how about two?

Small apartment owners, rug layering can be your solution to creating the illusion of different rooms in your space! Cover the entire room in a large rug and place a small rug in the living room area and another fluffy rug by the bed.
