European larch

European larch is a great choice for specimen plantings or in groups for parks and large areas. Unlike most conifers, it drops its needles in winter. The larch is not a true evergreen since it is one of the few conifers whichlose their leaves in winter.


Larix decidua, commonly called European or common larch , is a deciduous conifer although it looks like a needled evergreen in summer. The trees are commonly planted as ornamental trees in Europe. It was introduced to Britain in the 17th century.
