Particle board underlayment

Particleboard underlayment. Use as underlayment for resilient flooring to provide a suitable and durable installation surface for finished flooring products. So I am arguing with the builder about his installation of the underlayment (it is Ultraply by Moreland). He is screwing it to the particle board.

It is NOT suitable to use as a structural subfloor material. Your underlayment is particle board and is not suitable for ceramic tile. Most tile mortars specifically disallow bonding to particle board.


It’s inexpensive, flat, smooth and bonds well to the vinyl adhesives. Essentially, particle board isn’t a great choice for tile or real hard woo but it’s OK for carpet. The problem with tile is the mortar.


When you spread mortar on particle board , it can absorb the liquid and swell, popping some of the tiles. Doesn’t always happen, but can. And for hard woo it needs a secure sub floor to nail into.


It is often used as underlayment to a continuous sheet of vinyl floor coverings since exposure to moisture causes it to expand and discolor. This particle board is designed for sub-floor construction use. The plan is to install a commercial grade glue down vinyl tile as the finished floor.
