1 2 Marine grade plywood

Its exposure durability rating is EXTERIOR and the glue. Marine grade unfinished plywood in either Fir or Baltic Birch. This plywood is good on one side with a BB grade front that is smooth but can have patches and minor blemishes. Exterior but not Marine , such as A-B, A-A or C-C Exterior, may contain any other permissible species and contain C- grade veneer.


I cannot find a veneer count listed. Roseburg’s AB Marine Panel is marine - grade plywood that is produced entirely of Group species of veneer. Our marine plywood panel is sanded on both faces.


Marine - grade plywood is a specially designed panel made of Douglas fir or Western Larch, according to the APA-The Engineered Wood Association. All plies may have knots, but no knotholes. My page on Marine and Exterior plywood glue and on Phenol Formaldehyde which is often used in marine plywood. Voids not only weaken the plywood but create a ready path for water infiltration. For this reason Marine Grade Ply must not have voids.


We carry both Okoume and Sapele marine grade plywood. Marine Fir AB is marine - grade plywood that is produced entirely of Fir veneers. The Panel is sanded on both faces. The top is sanded smooth but may have small knots and the bottom will have unfilled voids.


This does not effect the durability of the plywood , it just may not look as nice as you expect. A typical plywood grade would be A- 1. This means that the plywood would have an “A” grade face with a “ ” back. A- and B- plywood grades are typically the grades most often used in ½” and thicker panels for cabinet work. The most common grade used in ¼” panels is A-4. Rift sawn genuine Burmese teak face and back, Tropical hardwood core, This is decorative marine plywood , Best used when appearance is important.


A-- The back is a balancing tropical hardwood. I am sure marine grade plywood is fine if you can afford to ship it from a specialty house for about $1a sheet. Personally I am going with ACX from lowes. Good sanded faces on each side and exterior grade glue. These dimensions are suitable for most uses on a boat or ship, or in a residential setting requiring a waterproof engineered woo such as sub-flooring.


The letter identifies the face surface grade while the number identifies the back surface grade. Face Grades range from A thru E, with A being the best. Back Grades range from thru with being the best. Plywood can have faces and backs of different grades. AB marine grade Douglas Fir plywood is frequently used for lapstrakes and hull planking on wood boats.

Both faces are smooth with no open knots on either side. Pressure treated BC or STK CC Grade Douglas Fir is great for use under carpeting where rot and fungus resistance is required. The standard grade thin veneer plywood is for interior use only.

The designer of your planing power boat probably specified marine grade plywood for that reason. Large displacement type boats that spend all their time in the water, at the dock or at sea, should also use quality marine plywood.


Many of our cabinet grade plywood panels have hardwood veneer that is hand selected for quality and consistency prior to being laminated to the core. Other species of hardwood may also be used for marine plywood , usually in the Marine (boating) industry. He says it is different than pressure treated or outdoor plywood. Marine plywood is high quality plywood manufactured with an A- grade sanded surface face on both sides with no core gaps and permanent waterproof A-bond glue.


Our Fir Marine Grade plywood is strong, bends well, and is of medium weight. It is the most economical option for marine plywood. If decay is a concern, it should be pressure-preservative treated to an appropriate standard. I bought the plywood less than weeks ago for a reflooring project on a boat I acquire and have since had to scrap the project. Whole piece veneers are used for both the faces and inner plies. Aquatek Marine Ply – 48” x Aquatek is a lauan based marine grade plywood.


Different sizes are available. In the Australian Standards grading system therefore it has a grading of AA-A bond. There is no second grade marine plywood.
