From staining and protection, to preparation, maintenance, cleaning and repair, Minwax makes and keeps wood beautiful. The crystal clear finish is ideal for use over light woods like maple, ash and birch as well as over Minwax Water Based Wood Stains. It is completely clear and does not have a yellow tint like oil based polyurethane. So it is best used when you don’t want a yellowish colored layer over your furniture and more so over light colored paint.


Tidying up is super easy because it is water based. Simply clean your rags, hands and brushes with water and soap. The polycrylic I bought from them was definitely a urethane and acrylic blend. Water based finishes can be a little tricky to apply.

This covering, made by Minwax , is water - based , which means it washes up with plain water. Even with a new can, have to spray heavier coats to get a smooth finish. Horizontal surfaces come out okay, but on vertical surfaces it will run and sag. Polycrylic is a combination of the words Polyurethane and Acrylic.

First, I tried Minwax water based oil polycrylic. Immediately, the red paint ran into the white, ending up with a pink and white Razorback. I had to carefully sand off the poly and repaint all of the red and white. Then, I bought Minwax water based polycrylic. The red immediately started to run, again.
