Moisture barrier paint

It combines a primer and finish in a single, fast drying coat and is specially formulated for manufactured housing facilities. Protect and preserve your below grade architectural surfaces (e.g. concrete foundations) using HydroHalt, a high quality water and vapor barrier membrane. Without water vapor barrier paint , the warm air would release its water inside of the walls and ceilings, where the water would saturate the insulation and framing. This is an ideal building practice in the extreme northern communities of Canada, less so as you come further south. A paint -only solution would be a vapor retarder at best, not a vapor barrier.

If you need a vapor barrier , you need poly. Aluminum paint would likely be the most vapor -restrictive paint , but last I recall there were fire hazards associated with its use. Basement vapor barrier paint is a modern development for water barrier techniques.

In the basement, water vapor can travel up from the ground and affect the walls and floor in the lower half of your home. In new construction, such a vapor barrier is applied to the wall framing before the plaster or drywall is installed. An alternative solution to the condensation problems described might be the use of paints resistant to vapor penetration for interior walls. In effect, the paint itself then might become a vapor barrier.

Creosote railroad ties

Creosote is a tar-like substance used to protect the railroad ties against the elements. The EPA has not approved creosote as a wood treatment for residential use. The creosote on the treated railroad ties is considered a toxic substance and can contaminate groundwater and soil. Railroad ties can leach creosote into soil and water systems.

Creosote railroad ties

Eating food or drinking water with high levels of creosote may cause burning in the mouth and throat, stomach pains, severe skin irritation, convulsions, and kidney and liver problems in humans. Creosote Treated Used Railroad Tie is ideal for any nonstructural earth-retaining applications. Offers a rustic appearance. It protects wood against termites, fungi, mites and other pests that can degrade or threaten the integrity of wood products. A new vegetable garden made of railroad ties and how I made the gate and put a fence around it.

Balancing the choice of toxic railroad ties for a garden. Gases released from creosote are also harmful in a closed space, so railroad ties should not be used in a greenhouse or indoors. Many other materials can be used for constructing a raised be so there is no reason to give up the idea. Some creosote types were used historically as a treatment for components of seagoing and outdoor wood structures to prevent rot (e.g., bridgework and railroad ties , see image).

Cedar moths

This way the essential oils in the woo which is a naturally very oily, will evaporate and give off a scent. If it is finished cedar or if the cedar furniture is quite ol the amount of essential oil remaining will have decreased considerably. It can be hard to keep moths and other little pest from entering your home. Moth balls do repel moths , but they are pretty toxic.

Mothballs, the synthetic chemical alternative to cedar oil, are effective but largely because they are pure pesticide and can be dangerous for. Their hairs are irritants and will shed easily. I have found that cedar oil is a great alternative to repelling moths in my closets.

Woolen clothing is readily consumed by the larvae of clothes moths and it has somehow become common practice to put mothballs in closets to repel moths during the summer. How can you get rid of clothes moths ? Mothballs, lavender bags, cedar wood… what weaponry can help you win the war against moths ? The eggs then hatch and the larvae eat at the fibers. They do not repel moths and moths are not repulsed by the smell of cedar.

I guess the idea is to reduce the chances of finding the smell of animal fibers. An old cedar chest like your aunt’s will not protect clothes or woolens from clothes moths. One study suggested that a cedar chest more than three years old is practically useless for killing clothes moth larvae.

Installing an outdoor outlet

Outdoor outlets have watertight covers that allow them to stay covered even with a cord plugged in. If you need additional outlets in the yar install an outlet strip rated for exterior use (Photo 3). Make the wire connections between the cable and a GFCI outlet.

Screw the outlet to the box, then apply a bead of silicone around the face of the box. From inside the garage, install a cable connector onto the main electrical box. Pass the cable end through the connector, then tighten the connector. The outlet is always hot, and the switch controls only the light.

If you don’t have an outdoor box to tap in to, consider installing one on your house. You can expand the project to include additional outlets , switches and lights. You stretch what seems like miles of extension cord around your house to weed whack, plug in Christmas lights, or just listen to some tunes while enjoying your yard. Turn the power on at the circuit-breaker box and test both the interior and exterior outlets.

Outlet location: If your outdoor outlet is installed in an area with existing wiring or access to an electrical box, it takes less time to install and reduces labor costs significantly. Of course, the opposite is also true. Notice: Outdoor receptacle outlets must have GFCI protection. The concern is that the outlet will be protected against the weather elements and prevent moisture from entering the receptacle outlet.

Hardwood floor cupping

Hardwood floor cupping

The wood flooring subsequently crowned when it dried out and had to be replace even though it was a new floor. Moisture affects solid wood floors and engineered wood floors in slightly difference ways. In fact, in some cases exact OPPOSITE situations create wood floor cupping in a solid versus an engineered. Patching holes in sheetrock

Drywall damage can be fixed easily with minimal equipment. Drywall is also known as wallboar plasterboar gypsum boar or sheetrock. To repair and conceal drywall holes of various sizes, simply follow the steps below. Place the patch over the hole and pencil its outline on the damaged wall.

We are here to show you how to fix a large hole in drywall. A hole in your drywall is not the end of the world. This step by step process will show you the simple and easy way to repair a large. We have six different ways to make the repair depending on the size, type and place of the damage.

Patching drywall , regardless of the size of the hole , is fairly simple with the proper tools and techniques. If it was a large hole and you used a mesh patch or mesh tape, it won’t hold. If, however, you used the final method of patching with a matching piece of sheetrock , it should hold pretty goo depending on the weight of the art. It will not hold as well as the original sheetrock , though. So be careful of the weight.

Patching holes in sheetrock

When patching a larger hole , you need to provide an actual drywall patch and also the structural support for the patch. The challenge of patching holes in drywall is in covering the gap. Joint compound is fine for filling cracks, but won’t work for small holes bigger than a quarter.

Rug beetles

To get rid of carpet beetles in your home, start by thoroughly vacuuming all of your carpets and upholstered furniture. Look for clothes, linens, and towels that have been eaten away, and discard them to prevent the infestation from spreading. The varied carpet beetle in many ways does resemble the bed bug. Anthrenus verbasci are small, about 3mm in length, and flat.

Much like bed bugs they are even oval-shaped when looked at from the top down. In this post, we’ll talk about carpet mites, what causes carpet beetles , where carpet beetles come from and how to avoid a carpet beetle infestation. Tung oil finish

Tung oil finish

Easy to maintain, it is the ideal protective finish for woods that have been refinished because it penetrates wood pores to restore vitality to dry, thirsty wood. The oil has been used for centuries as a water-resistant finish for boats and other wooden objects, as well as to finish stone. Tung Oil as a Woodworking Finish What it is. Tung oil or China wood oil is a drying oil obtained by pressing the seed from the nut of the tung tree (Vernicia fordii).

Tung oil finish

Tung oil hardens upon exposure to air, and the resulting coating is transparent and has a deep, almost wet look. The oil ’s matte finish will do nicely on certain pieces of furniture, but if a glossy finish is preferred you will need to buff and wax the finish or use polymerized tung oil or a formulated tung oil based product over top. Maintaining tung oil finish is quite easy as light stains and scratches on the finish can be removed by lightly sanding the wood and then, applying a thin layer of tung oil. Tung oil finishes are usually applied to unfinished woo but they can be used over oil based stains. Other types of existing finishes , such as varnish, must be remove as tung oil is a penetrating oil.
