You can upgrade to washed and re-graphited shot that some people have used for reloading. Shot is lead with antimony to make it hard. If you are buying reclaimed shot it should be clean and regraphited already. Check it for sand and dirt which is tuff on a gun.


Good quality reclaimed shot will work perfectly for yard trap. If it is pretty bad quality, it’s worth a try, but you might want to use one choke tighter than usual. How do you tell good from bad quality reclaimed shot ? The good stuff should look like new shot with a few flat spots on the pellets.


I have reclaimed shot from a trap club I belong to and screen it in the field to get most of the dirt and sand out of it. Its just been air cleane and not to be used for reloading. The shot then gets graphited in 25lb batches in a tumbler for hours and comes out great. Its work no doubt about it but for a couple of hours of your time you get pretty good and I can see no difference in the reclaimed shot vs new shot in my scores. The last thing you want is holes in your pattern.


If it was me, I would shoot reclaimed in practice, and factory (preferably Lawrence Brand) in competition. The most likely problem you will have is getting the stuff to flow through your loader. It is fairly common to get shot bridging in the drop tube which in a shell or two with no shot followed by a big mess around your loaders. Reclaimed shot varies widely in quality.

We went through a bag of reclaimed from a reloading supply store to find it was LOADED with steel shot (checked passing a magnet through the bag).


Does anyone have a source for reclaimed shot ? We also carry high quality reclaimed shot for $29. Brownells while the highest price is $787. The shot is reclaimed from a range north of here, cleane graphited and sold to shooter like me, first come first served. My buddy picked up 1lbs, and split it three ways. The first boxes are now loadeusing my pet recipe.


Have used several 1pounds in muzzle loaders without any problems, and used the same reclaimed shot in cartridge guns for hand thrown targets and rabbit hunting. RECLAIMED LEAD SHOT WASHED-RE-GRAPHITE (2-25) Bags …. I load reclaimed shot for shooting trap. BTW, arsenic does appear in some lead alloys, like wheelweights, but usually in trace quantities.


However, reclaimed shot that is not melted and re-dropped is worth substantially less than new shot (which is selling for $per bag in my neck of the woods), due to the heterogeneity of shot size and quality, and the likelihood of contaminants. Containing a mixture of all diameters, this is a superior product for ballast weight, fishing lures and more. If you shot the stuff with rocks and steel shot in it, you can ruin your shotgun. The sample bags to look over are nice.


You can soon see if they are worth the effort and price. Clients who previously were purchasing new material, are now switching to reclaimed , due to the rapidly rising scrap surcharges. The shot will cost $per pound bag and if we order just bags he’ll deliver it to the club for free. But that is after cleaning and graphiting.


I have heard that it is not easy to melt but have never tried doing so. Dusty is correct about the antimony content. Magnum” or “hard” shot will have. For casting, you will need to add tin. We screen and airwash the shot multiple times to remove foreign objects and dust.


At Mayco Industries we believe that reloading its self is as much a sport as the actual shooting events themselves. I will call the local ranges and see what they get. I have used reclaimed shot and it was great, way cheaper and breaks birds just fine. We had our field mined and cleaned the shot in a cement mixer. If that is the case it debunks the claim that 0. I would recommend using reclaimed shot IF you can find a reputable reclaimer, and know where the shot is coming from. Obviously, an active trap and skeet club is the best place.


Best ya can do is shop around. Coating prevents lead to bore contact. Bullets feed well in automated bullet feeders. Can be shot through Polygonal rifling.
