How to run cable wire through finished walls

Going through studs is difficult with thick wire like HDMI cables. You would probably be best to cut the drywall away where the wires will go and patch up the drywall after. You cannot run type NM cable through cinder block by code anyway.

If you do not want to spend a lot of money for this I suggest you try wire mold on the cinder block wall or conduit on the outside of the wall just the same. Go in the attic locate the plate drill down, feed wire through with a wall fish measure over to location, cut hole in wall than install vanity wall plate and you are finished. How to Fish Wires Through Walls. Fishing wires through a wall can be tedious, but in most cases, you only need a couple basic tools. Run TV Cables in Wall Spaces.

Running electrical wires behind your walls is a great way to add an additional outlet or switch right where you need it. The most important decision of running cable comes first: finding the best route from the existing cable to the destination. To make this simple, cut off the two insulated wires (black and white) and leave the bare ground wire.

Wrap the bare wire through the fish tape eye and twist the end of the wire around itself. Place electrical tape over the end of the fish tape eye and wire. You are now ready to pull the wire through the hole.

Then wrap the remaining ground wire through the rod’s eyelet and wrap it back around the wire’s sheathing several times. Finally, wrap the whole area with electrical tape. When hooking coaxial cable , just tape the whole wire to the glow rod. You’ll never lose a light wire just using tape.

If you’re working from the attic, you can drop a weighted string down wall cavity, then attach the wire to the string and pull it through. Run the wire or cable to its destination. Another problem is fire stops running horizontally between two studs. These boards could prevent you from running a wire down that wall.

If you need to wire around an existing door but don’t want to cut away all the wallboard above the header and can’t get through the attic or basement, run the cable through the shim space around the door. Remove the door trim and the baseboard molding. Turn off the power and pull the cable through the studs and the shim space. If surface-mounted wiring through conduit is unacceptable, you can run new wire through the walls and finish it almost invisibly once the job is complete.

Tap the wall with a hammer across the. Continue across the wall until the wire is through each stud. We’re going to tie into an existing electrical outlet and run new electrical wire and TV cables up through the wall.

Once you finish the steps to this video, move on to part two: Adding an Electrical Outlet: TV hook-up. Since our cable is running across the joists, the only option is to cut out the drywall on the ceiling. Remember, this is an enclosed ceiling between floors.

This is where it gets ugly. However, in your home you might find an easier way to run the cable. Running wire through exterior walls will be more difficult as they contain insulation. Step 2: Find the framing Get a damn good stud finder and a pencil and start marking studs and measuring from exterior walls to make sure you end up strait as you go from floor to floor. Are the wires in the wall?

Is it legal to run wires under baseboard trim (as people often seem to suggest)? Does one usually cut away some drywall under the baseboard to make room for the cables or is there usually enough space under the existing drywall to cram some cables? Does anything change if I use metal or armor-clad cables? The second and far more common case is when you are running wire inside of closed walls in preparation for finishing the room as a living space. With new-construction homes, the walls might begin as open walls that need to have an electrical wire run through them, then are later closed up by the drywall team.

Running Wires in your Basement When running electrical cables through an unfinished basement area the National Electrical Code requires that you drill holes through the floor joist not less than 1. Tape the ends of the exposed wires together. Attach a pull string to the end of the existing cable , and pull the cable back up and out of the wall. Connect the new cable with tape to the existing cable and drop both back down the wall.

Terminate both cables into one duplex jack and faceplate, if possible. The most common cable management systems conceal wires behind molded plastic raceways that run along the walls and baseboard. While these can clean up things immensely, there are other slightly more involved but still easy to install systems that allow the cables to be run behind walls. Running wires horizontal through walls to code I need to run electrical cables (romex) across several finished walls (drywall) in my house. In my experience, the “wire fish” tool is necessary… we tried a wire clothes-hanger, and it wouldn’t work.

Then, your run up to the jack can either be behind the wall (a short run that you should be able to fish relatively easily) or just up the wall (home improvement stores have cable channels to help tidy this up). A third option for exterior walls is to run it in conduit on the outside of the home. You may need to station a helper near the hole to catch the cable.

Feed the cable vertically through the hole to the box. It helps to straighten out a coat hanger, tape the cable to it and feed the coat hanger through the hole. The stiff coat hanger wire is easier to manipulate and catch than electrical cable. If there is a coax jack then that suggests there is a cable running to the jack. The basic goal being to snake a cable from an existing splitter in the attic, down through the wall and out a new hole in the bedroom.

Would it be appropriate to run the wire from the ceiling fan point, across the ceiling and out that hole in the closet, pull it out from there, then drop it into the hole in the wall? There would be about inches of exposed romex in the upper corner of the closet where it leaves the ceiling and goes into the wall. The simplest way to bond your coaxial cable to the rest of the house is to run the cables through a grounding block, and then run a wire from the block to the grounding electrode (ground rod) or other qualifying grounding connection point. If you have no idea where any part of the home’s grounding system is, call an electrician.

If you do have to run cable through a wall without the aid of an existing pull cable , buy a fish tape (sometimes called a wiring snake).
