Is it okay to have an ungrounded. If the light does not have a white wire due to its age, then attach the white electrical wire to the silver screw on the fixture. Locate the green ground screw that will either be on the light fixture itself or on the mounting bracket used to hang the light fixture. Sometimes the light fixture will have a green wire coming from it. Ground wires are typically attached to a ground screw or screw terminal connection on either the light fixture , receptacle outlet, or electrical devices or components including the electrical junction box, or ground lead wire from light fixtures and other the electrical devices which provide a connection for the ground wire. Most light fixtures have two electrical wires with colored insulation and a copper ground wire.


An enthusiastic homeowner can save the cost of a professional by knowing which wires connect to which. To ground a lighting fixture , you must first remove the fixture canopy. Next, connect one end of the ground wire to the ground screw on the crossbar. Then thread the ground wire next to the fixture wire through the fixture chain (if applicable). The white wire and red wire connect to the white and black wire from my fixture. The unmarked wire is the hot wire. Connect it to the colored (usually black or red) hot wire in the box.


Complete the hook-up by looping the ground wire clockwise around the ground screw on the crossbar, tightening the screw, and connecting the end of the wire to the ground wire from the light fixture. The box must be acceptable for use with your light fixture and be securely attached to the building structure to support the weight of the fixture. It must also be grounde or attached to a ground wire in the ceiling. The wires to the existing fixtures are all 14-with a ground wire.


I purchased two plastic ceiling boxes and two simple porcelain light fixtures. When I started the wiring , two questions came up: 1. My new fixture (fairly low-power single pendant light ) has a ground wire , but I just wrapped it around the grounding screw in the mounting bar. Your light fixture likely has three wires … two of these are what you will wire to the plug, and the third is a copper ground wire. Usually if you are wiring a regular fixture you match the black to black wires and white to white… but in this case my plug in came with two white wrapped wires so I didn’t have that colour guidance. I am installing a simple light fixture in the ceiling of my living room.


Using a wire cutter, cut the length of the light fixture ’s electric wires to the length of the house wires. If necessary, use wire strippers to remove the insulation from the light fixture ’s electric wires. Wrap the copper or silver ground wires from the light fixture around the ground screw. Wire the fixture as you normally woul but mark the white wire that is normally neutral as hot with either black paint or tape as it leaves the fixture box and also on the switch end.


Even though they are different gauges, using a copper ground wire connector will be the best solution for safely connecting them. I generally connect the grounds first, then the hot and neutral wires for a light fixture. Use the connectors shown and linked below to get the ground wires safely installed. In one case, the incoming bare wire is cut back to the insulation and not even available for connection, apparently not used on purpose. The neutral wire is basically a ground wire.


Attach the ground wire from the junction box by twisting it around the green ground screw on the mounting bracket. Attach the bare wire from the house to the bare wire from the light fixture. Attach the white wires from the house and the white wires from the light fixture.


Find great deals on eBay for wire light fixture. I think think there is a grounding stake or wire (or whatever you call it) outside in the ground , but not sure if it connnects to this light fixture ? Also, the breaker panel has been redone ~ And the new light fixture has this yellow insulation? There will likely be a small screw for this purpose on the fixture , which you can unscrew slightly, slot the wire into the gap between screw and fixture , and then tighten to fasten your ground.
