Veneer Core is produced by placing the “lines” of core veneer s into the panel “sandwich” so that adjacent plies having a grain direction oriented at approximate right angles to each other. Veneer Core plywood consists of a center veneer and crossband veneer s alternately layered on both sides of the center to the desired thickness producing an odd number of veneer s for the core. The weight-bearing strength of Veneer Core plywood is excellent along with its bending strength and screw-hold ability. The most common type of plywood core is made up of layers of veneer–typically fir in the west, poplar in the east, and aspen in the northeast. Of the three most common types of plywood core, veneer core is the lightest (approximately pounds per 4×panel) and has the best strength, stability, and screw-holding properties. Lumber core plywood is for interior use only.


It’s typically used where the edge of the plywood will be seen or sometimes shaped. It’s light weight, high quality, expensive, holds fasteners well, especially on edges.
