Laminated strand lumber

Laminated strand lumber

This revolutionary product is used for a broad range of applications including rim boar millwork and window, door and garage door headers, as well as for many industrial uses. Shop Menards for great selection of laminated veneer lumber that can be used as headers or as floor and ceiling beams. It is typically used for headers , beams , rimboard , and edge-forming material. As a widely available engineered wood product, it is good for builders and healthy for the environment, both at the same time. Find out more about this durable, convenient and green home improvement material.

Laminated strand lumber has a lot to offer. Structural composite lumber (SCL), which includes laminated veneer lumber (LVL), parallel strand lumber (PSL), laminated strand lumber (LSL) and oriented strand lumber (OSL), is a family of engineered wood products created by layering dried and graded wood veneers, strands or flakes with moisture resistant adhesive into blocks of material known as billets, which are subsequently resawn into specified sizes. As a result, it’s one of the most innovative and versatile building products available — a suitable solution for a diverse range of applications such as tall walls, beams, rim boar sill plates and so much more. LSL beams and columns are made by shredding wood from fast-growing, low-value hardwood logs, such as aspen, birch and poplar into thin strands.

To follow the overview of EWPs, this section of the presentation takes a closer look at one of the specific EWP building materials— laminated strand lumber (LSL). It’s strong, straight and ideal for a variety of applications. Long lengths and uniform dimensions reduce jobsite waste and low moisture content reduces shrinkage. Members are commonly fabricated in ¼”, ½”, ¾” and ½” widths, and in ¼”-16” depths to match common i-joists.

Stud options are available in equivalent 2× 2× and 2×sizes that are stronger, straighter, and (as needed) longer than sawn lumber. Combined with an adhesive, the strands are oriented and formed into a large mat or billet and pressed. There are no knots, splits or voids and the strength and stiffness properties of laminated strand lumber (LSL) exceed those of traditional lumber. These laminated veneer beams and headers eliminate twisting, shrinking and splitting, and deliver flatter, quieter floors. Choose from a variety of dimensional and engineered lumbers, from imported hardwood to domestic western softwood.

We offer our lumber in a wide range of kiln-dry levels as well. Individual pieces of lumber are end-joined together to create long lengths referred to as laminations. Oriented strand lumber (OSL) is made from flaked wood strands with a high length-to-thickness ratio. The manufacture of OSL also represents the efficient utilization of wood resources because it makes use of strands from fast-growing and underutilized species.

Tensile strength of thermally modified laminated strand lumber and laminated veneer lumber Matthew D. Aroa, Xiping Wangb, Dwight E. Other members of this category are parallel strand lumber (PSL) and laminated strand lumber (LSL). All members of this category are strong and predictable, and are thus interchangeable for some applications. LSL is the acronym for laminated strand lumber. LSL is a smart choice for stick-built construction.

LSL is incomparable in terms of framing and floor support because, in many instances, LSL outperforms traditional lumber. LP Building Products treated laminated strand lumber (LSL) with zinc borate to protect against mold and insects. MJB has established long term partnerships with both domestic and off shore supply sources to ensure a comprehensive mix of raw material supply options for our customers. SCL materials tested included laminated veneer lumber (LVL), parallel strand lumber (PSL), and laminated strand lumber (LSL).

Instead of wasting time cobbling together headers, crew can quickly install this affordable engineered lumber option. Our TimberStrand LSL headers reduce installation time and provide a one-piece solution for residential door and window openings. Engineered wood products run the gamut from oriented strand board to plywood to laminated veneer lumber (LVL) and can be a resilient alternative to solid-sawn wood while increasing a project’s design potential. Structural Composite Lumber (SCL) is the term used to describe a family of engineered wood products used for structural applications. Tall wood buildings like TMinneapolis have used NLT as floor and roof panels atop Glulam beams.

Glulam is typically used for the beams, while cross- laminated timber is typically used for floors and walls. It is available in three grades for greater cost-effectiveness. Combined with adhesive, the strands are orientated and formed into a large mat or billet and pressed. Like Oriented Strand Board (OSB), LSL is made from the long strands of fast-growing plantation aspens or poplar.

The difference is that the strands are aligned in the major axis. Table shows analysis of variances of the mechanical and physical properties of laminated strand lumber. When factoring in load requirements, member size and costs, deciding on the best solution can be a daunting process. There is no cull in the stack, now crowning, and very little frame checking before sheetrock to ensure flat walls.

Flanges are commonly made of laminated veneer lumber (LVL), visually graded lumber , or MSR lumber. The webs are made of either oriented strandboard (OSB) or plywood. Brochures Back to resources. T-TEC LSL and Tolko LSL Overview 1. A glue- laminated timber is an engineered wood product, meaning it is made from wood but is machined and assembled to precise specifications to create a predictable, dimensionally stable building material.

Other common engineered wood products include plywoo oriented strandboard (OSB), and laminated veneer lumber (LVL).
