New buildings must have a CO, and existing buildings must have a current or amended CO when there is a change in use, egress or type of occupancy. A document issued by a local building or Zoning authority to the owner of premises attesting that the premises have been built and maintained according to the provisions of building or zoning ordinances, such as those that govern the number of fire exits or the safety of electrical wiring. Any building that has been legally occupie without a change of occupancy as defined by the building or land use codes, is assumed to have a CofO for the current use.
