Other common names: Nootka cypress, sitka cypress, pacific yellow cedar. Alaskan Yellow Cedar Scientific Name: Chamaecyparis nootkatensis. Recent reclassifications have moved it from Chamaecyparis to a newly created genus named Xanthocyparis, and then to Callitropsis , and finally back into Cupressus. Itmoist climates, and thus it is only found along coastal areas.


Pacific coast of North America from Oregon up into Canada and Alaska. Considered the crown jewel around boat builders, it has exceptional resistance to weather and insects. Exposed outdoors, it weathers to a uniform silver gray. Easy to work with, holds paint well and takes stains, glues, and finishes well. It thrives in moist climates and it is only found along these coastal areas.

The most valuable species in Alaska. Extremely tight graine the average growth rings per inch (RPI) for southeast Alaska Yellow Cedar exceeds RPI (research from the Ketchikan Wood Technology Center). Despite its name, Alaskan yellow cedar actually grows all along the Pacific Northwest coast, from southeast Alaska to southern Oregon. A relatively rare species, its highest concentrations are in southeast Alaska and coastal Oregon. The wood is uniformly yellow in color and offers excellent decay and insect resistance.


Nootka Cypress, yellow cypress, Alaska Cypress, whatever you call it, it is some pretty cool wood. Alaska yellow cedar heartwood is a bright clear yellow , while the sapwood is lighter in color. The wood contains a volatile oil which gives it a distinctive odor and may add a gloss to worked surfaces. This prized wood is densest of all cedars and has excellent resistance to insects and decay.


Quite light, being only slightly heavier than Western Red Cedar and highly aromatic. Yellow Cedar is the hardest known cedar in the worl giving it exceptional resistance to weather and insects. Yellow Cedar is heavier, and more dense than Western Red though, and also has a very fine texture and straight grain, giving it excellent strength and stability, with very little shrinkage.
