Water based polycrylic

Polycrylic is water based protective coat. It can be applied with a spray bottle or roller. From staining and protection, to preparation, maintenance, cleaning and repair, Minwax makes and keeps wood beautiful.


It applies clear and can be cleaned up easily based on its water - based makeup. It is available in satin and high gloss finishes. For use over bare woo oil- and water - based stains, paint and wallpaper.


It dries very quickly, although it can take a long time to. A topcoat that combines superior durability and the warm look of traditional polyurethane with the convenience of a water - based finish. The 1-qt can is ideal for use on lumbers such as ash, birch and maple and works well on darker, water - based timber stains. Neither of these coatings will amber over time, which is typical with other polyurethane type products. To apply this product, however, you will need to allow the paint to fully cure (at least days) first.

Can I apply water - based polyurethane over an oil based stain? This is because the curing process for oil is polymerisation, and polymerised oil is akin to resin. It also can go over oil- based finishes and can be applied using synthetic-bristle brushes, a foam roller or a rag, as can other water - based polyurethanes. Water based finishes can be a little tricky to apply. They dry fast which means you have to apply them fast.

It is also easy to clean brushes between applications, as it is water soluble while still wet. But, when it dries, it produces a tough lustrous finish.


The polycrylic acts much like oil- based polyurethane as far as sanding between coats to build a finish. I’ve never used the oil-modified water - based polyurethan, so I’m not sure about that one. This is just one way of many to spray a water based finish. I have personally seen your product turn streaky, but that was over paint products. If you used a oil- based or oil-modified stain or sometimes even a different bran this scenario is possible.


This protective finish dries extremely fast! With the help of a roller, it can be applied. I read somewhere that because chalk paint is water based when you use a water based polycrylic it deactivates the chalk paint. It has the advantage of a quick drying time.


They said to use an oil based sealer. That is the opposite of everything I have ever heard. Water - based formula provides fast drying for quick recoating, low odor for ease of use, less irritation, and warm water clean up of tools and equipment.


Recoating in hours and dries completely in hours. I love Varathane’s water - based polyurethane, but the oil- based one is not my favorite due to yellowing. This covering, made by Minwax, is water - based , which means it washes up with plain water.


If your wood will be exposed to the elements outdoors, use Helmsman Spar Urethane, which blocks sunlight, water , and temperature changes. Keep in mind that most clear finishes add a slight amber tint to the wood. First, I tried Minwax water based oil polycrylic.

Immediately, the red paint ran into the white, ending up with a pink and white Razorback. I had to carefully sand off the poly and repaint all of the red and white. Then, I bought Minwax water based polycrylic. The red immediately started to run, again. Minwax says it’s OK, but the lady at the home improvement store said no.


Could you please break the tie? I think it gives a pretty good finish without a lot of fuss. However, it seems I always fight with bubbles in the cured finish.
