Painting without tape

I paint all the time and can attest to the wisdom of painting without tape. Tape has to be very secure in order not to allow bleeding through. Frog tape is a great alternative to painter’s tape and I think works even just a little bit better! Because ceilings tend to have more texture, I do use the cutting in method with a good brush for the top of the walls.


I don’t always use a drop cloth to protect the floors, I rarely wear paint clothes, and I never bother with painters tape. Take your clean, angled brush, load it up with paint , and rest it gently close to the edge you want to paint. Make sure it doesn’t glop too much. Believe it or not, it is actually pretty easy to paint walls up to the ceiling and around woodwork… without using masking ( painter ’s) tape ! There is a simple technique involved called “cutting in”. If your wall needs a fresh coating of paint and you need to paint on edges, you can do it easily without tape.


The usual solution to paint edges without smudging the next surface is to apply tape along the sides. As an avid DIY painter , I’ve already paintedseveral doors, walls, and ceilings in my house without having to use a painter ’s tape. That clean paint brush you save it’s time to get it dirty. Tape can be tricky to position properly and can leave residue after removal. Short of hiring a professional, there seem to be few options that allow for that perfect line between wood and glass without getting tape involved. How to cut in and get clean edges without using tape : Use an angled brush. Dip your brush in the paint about a half-inch in. Wipe off excess paint from the side of the brush that will go against the wall.


Remove the tape after the paint has thoroughly dried. Cutting In: Favored by professional painters, the cut in method is pure freehand painting. Metal masking guards are not use either. However, tape contains adhesive that may cause you to pull the paint off the wall when you remove it. To be safe, you can use a different method that will not involve any masking tape.


You may paint a straight line or free. The solution is to let the paint dry completely. Then score the edge of the tape with a putty knife before you pull it off. This will break any bond that has formed with the paint and ensure that the masking tape will come off cleanly without damaging your paint job.


DD taught me how to paint a room without using tape. Start by dipping your brush about inches into the paint. I like to drag the brush against the edge of the can to clean off one side.


Because the white paint has already bled under the tape – but it matches, so no big deal! Allow the white paint to dry on the tape. Do not remove the tape yet! Without removing the tape , I then painted the wall color right on top of the painted tape (See photo below.) Allow it to dry at least – minutes. Then, carefully remove the.

Now the way to get this paint off is with a razor blade. Using the same color, paint along the tape edge. This seems strange but, there will always be some bleeding under the tape.
