Maple stain

For DIY homeowners the best advice is to avoid staining Maple , Birch, and Cherry. This week’s question comes from Darin. He writes: I am trying to finish maple to a brown appearance.


I am using a dewaxed shelac as a sanding sealer and this imparts a slightly amber tone to the wood and when I apply the col. I get an orange tone wood instead of the brown I would. For amateurs the best advice is to avoid staining hard Maple , Birch, and Cherry. Not impossible, just difficult. Due to variations in screens and lighting, we do not require you to make a final stain selection when you order.


The original formula was created by Ken Thompson of Slippery Rock, Pa to highlight the curl on maple gun stocks. As with other hardwoods such as cherry, maple can be a bit temperamental to finish, particularly when staining. When applying a stain , be sure to use a pre- stain conditioner to try and even out the blotchy patches that tend to appear.


Some types of woo like pine, cherry, birch and maple , are notoriously difficult to stain. A board that has a nice, attractive grain pattern can end up with dark, splotchy areas after you apply the stain. Then seal and finish with the polyurethane varnish and wax, making note of how it turns out in each step of the process. Stain it with the chosen color.

Choose the right sheen for your interior wood surfaces. Less expensive than hard maple , birch is often substituted for maple in furniture and kitchen cabinets. But, like hard maple , birch wood does not absorb stain evenly and should not be stained with dark colored stains.


When staining , first apply a pre- stain wood conditioner, then select stains lighter in color. Find quality interior stains online or in store. Simply Search a Name and State.


You searched for: stained maple ! In these pictures, the cabinet on the left was dyed a shade of grey and the one on the right was dyed and stained. I used the stain on an antique Maple table top. I stripped the old finish and sanded with 3sandpaper before rubbing on the first coat. It went on as described in the literature. Please contact your Haas dealer for complete information.


Accent glazes are available on select door styles and finishes in Ebony (EB) or Mocha (MO) as listed. I normally use Transtint dyes from Homestead Finishing or the Woodessence equilivent. Dye stains will work for you. I personally use mixol dye. Do some research one using dye mixed stains.


Then mixing the dye into your finish will continue to darken with every finish coat applied. For exame stain the maple with brown stain or dye mix, then mix black dye into your finish and apply finish coats to further darken. Colonial Maple Premium Fast Dry Varathane qt.


Apply to wood for long-lasting, translucent stain. Uses exclusive soya-oil base and anti-settling formula for better grain enhancement with less stirring during application. During my visit to the US my host Calvin showed me a neat Black Powder gun makers technique for staining maple to bring out the curls. The two options available are staining maple using a dye (water soluble or solvent soluble, or alcohol-soluble) or using a conventional resin-based wiping stain. Maple can be hard to stain , depending on the stain.

Maple has little bitty pores and is a denser woo so absorbtion is not as goo and since the pores are so small, less pigment (if using a pigment stain ) will color the wood.
