How to wire a double light switch

How to wire a double light switch

I already gave you a detailed description of how to wire them when you asked earlier. We need to know more information. The red is the wire controlled by the switch that connects to the bathroom fan and light. What do you want to wire it to? Double switches, sometimes called double pole, allow you to separately control the power being sent to multiple places from the same switch.

You can mount the switches side-by-side in a double -gang. For example, you might want to turn on a bathroom light separately. If you are extending a circuit from an existing receptacle outlet to power light fixtures wired through a double switch box, you will need to install a double switch box, then run NM cables from the feed outlet location to the switch box. To begin the installation, verify all the necessary tools are within reach.

Installing a double electric switch can be tricky. Make sure to identify the lea load and ground wires to install the new switch properly. If there are any doubts during the process, an electrician should be consulted. The required materials are a voltage tester, screwdriver, electrical tape, wire cutter, wire stripper and grounding wrist strap.

I show how to wire a double switch that operates a light and an exhaust fan. This is in the Chicago area with conduit. The wiring in this case is pretty much the same as a single light switch , but there are some fundamental differences. This wiring allows the electricity to continue from the receptacle, on to any other outlets in the circuit and it provides a switch to control a light fixture or other loa such as. It is wired between two 3-way (single pole double throw) switches.

The most common use of a double pole switch in lighting is the 4-way ( double pole double throw) switch. The other and less common use is a double pole single throw switch that can switch both phases to a 2volt light. However, it can be done with a little patience and attention to detail. There are a number of configurations that can be used for wiring a 3-way switch.

They are: Power to switch to switch to single. Step - Wire in the Double Light Switch Connecting up a double switch light is essentially the same as connecting up a single switch light. The previous owner had changed the switch to a two rocker stack or double switch to add a light with the neutral screwed to the switch box. Pick up the hot feed wire with some pliers and using your screwdriver join it to the hot connection on the double switch light. If you hear a beep when you place the tester on the wire , go back to the breaker and make sure the power is turned off.

It is that sinking feeling when you flip the light switch on or running the garbage disposal in the kitchen sink and nothing happens. Now I want to add another separate light controlled from the same location so I purchased a three stack rocker switch to control the three devices. Use a voltage tester to double check that there is no power going to the light switch before you start work. That is when it is handy to know that a typical light switch is a single pole single throw switch an chances are, the operation of a garbage disposal relies on a double pole single throw switch. Control light fixtures at location with the Leviton Amp Combination Double Switch.

This switch easily fits over a standard wall box and is compatible with single-pole applications. With a pair of 3-way switches, either switch can make or break the connection that completes the circuit to the light. Its space-saving design permits other devices to be installed in the same box and allows for ample working and wiring space. The switch is for working two room lights separately. I attach drawing of the two switches.

Wiring a three way light switch. I tried wiring up the switch and did get one light working but having tried various alternatives, could I have the wrong switch ? Yes, there are a few…(read very, very, very few) switches that don’t require a neutral, but those will limit you to incandescent only. A double switch has switch levers in a single housing. You are able to control two light fixtures or appliances from one electrical box. You are not wiring a double switch - you are attempting to wire two separate switches on the same plate.

This switch arrangement is basically two two way switches on a single face plate. L COM and Lon both switches. Or is it you have nothing and wish to add the double power point and switch with light ? Do you now have a double power point and want to wire to a switch for a new light addition? If existing, the power points have their own switches for operation built into the unit? I have changed from a single light switch to a double switch to use on seperate lights.

I also want to replace the single switch to double switches (so I can control the fan and the light separately) Here is what I see when I open up the switch box with the single pole switch : Essentially, all the blacks are connected together, and the whites are connected together. How I do wire the above switch ?
