Watco wipe on poly

I tried watco wipe on poly. I applied three coats so far. I put minwax wipe - on poly over Watco Danish oil all the time. The only caveat is that you need to let the oil dry really well first. Mainly just thinned a bit, since you can wipe on any poly by thinning it a bit yourself.


You might have read that Watco and Minwax Tung Oil Finish are the same thing. I would not say they are the same thing, but they both are a polymerized oil, and might even have a little tung oil in the mix. It provides the protection of a polyurethane finish that is easily hand-applied to wood. It provides a strong, clear protective finish against water, stains, and rigorous wear and tear. Watco wipe-on poly is most like the Minwax oil-based product.

Then wipe off the excess and let it dry overnight before recoating, or one week before applying a film finish. I thought a hand applied wipe on finish will be better for a relatively new guy like me. I’ve used Watco brush on lacquer before and was please with the , so I was hoping that their wipe on poly will be a decent product as well.

Home Depot does not carry Minwax Wipe on Poly any more. They now sell Watco Wipe on Poly. I find the Watco is turning my cherry wood darker, and leaves a distinct oily smell when the finish is dry. Wipe on poly is an awesome product to use to add a layer of protection to your painted furniture. It’s easy and fast to apply, easy to clean up, and relatively inexpensive.


As a starting point, when deciding between an oil finish ( Watco Danish Oil) or a varnish finish (Minwax Wipe On Poly ), you must first determine if water protection is required for your project, like in the case of a coffee table. With Wipe - On Poly , you can easily protect furniture with intricate and ornamental designs, or with corners and crevices difficult to reach with a brush. It is recommended for use on interior furniture and intricate wood items. I often use poly on top of Watco oil and the are usually beautiful. I believed I screwed up again!


I attempted to apply minwax wipe on poly over a cherry bookcase top that I had applied Danish oil about weeks ago. I had forgotten why I stopped using wipe on poly products because no matter how I try I always get streaks. Re: Applying Wipe-on Poly over Watco Agree with what said above with a possible change or test next time around.


Minwax wipe - on Poly is a great product I have used many times for needing something reasonably price and readily available at your local hardware or box store. But, I prefer the more difficult to find General Finishes Arm-R-Seal (Green can). If you are looking for a glossy look, a wipe on poly is a good choice, but understand you will probably be putting on 4-coats, with sanding in between.


You also can do an oil finish first, wait 3-days to cure, then use a wipe on poly. Strongly recommend Watco Danish Oil - brush on to your fine wood object and let it soak in for mins. Brush on some more oil and wait mins more. Let dry for 2-days before applying Wipe - On Poly. I opted for a durable poly finish.


I started with a couple coats of Watco Danish Oil. So what you are really looking for is a simple wipe -on varnish to put over top of the shellac. I may end up doing wipe - on poly instea but I was hoping to do less sanding. Grease or oil can be removed using Watco Bio D - a solvent free degreaser.


WATCO Clear Wood Finishes. Galvanised metal should be treated with Watco Galvaprime or similar galvanised metal primer. Allow the metal to dry before coating. I was excited to try this stuff when I first saw it on the internet.


Responses to Hands-On: Watco Danish Oil – Cherry Finish. I used wipe - on poly over Watco Danish oil on my workbench, came out fine.
