Shedua

Also called Ovangkol, often sold for highly figured veneers. Har heavy and takes a glass-like finish. Shedua trees can grow to a height of 1feet, with trunks feet in diameter.

Lumber finishes to a high luster and takes stains and finishes well. Due to its high silica content, some dulling of tools may be noticed. Guibourtia ehie is an evergreen tree of the genus Guibourtia in the family Fabaceae, also known by the common names Amazique, Amazoué, Hyedua, Black Hyedua, Mozambique, Ovangkol and Shedua.


Species: Shedua Guibourtia ehie. Resembles Walnut, but has a fairly regular stripe. Shedua is heavy with a medium texture and interlocking grain. Works and glues very well.


When used in guitars, it’s most commonly referred to as Ovangkol. Most other woodworkers favor either Shedua or Amazique, while veneer is sometimes sold under the name Mozambique. All refer to the same wood species: Guibourtia ehie. Ordered some Shedua and Purplheart for a couple of small projects. The wood is moderately coarse, with an interlocked grain that produces striped an sometimes, curly figure. Turns, glues and finishes well. The trunk attains diameters of 90cm and has straight boles despite heavy buttressed at the root. Overall a fairly easy wood to work, though Shedua contains silica and can therefore dull cutters prematurely. Also, if the grain is interlocke or if there is other figure present in the woo planning and other machining operations may be troublesome and cause tear out. Shedua has a rather lustrous appearance and stains to an excellent finish. However, these are all names for the same African species: Guibourtia ehie.
