Cold weather caulk

They are often under the impression that caulking cannot be worked in temperatures below 4°C. Keep your caulking inside the house at least hours before you use it, and bring it out one tube at a time. That way at least the caulking itself will be warm and workable.


If the surface is cold , use a hair dryer or hot air gun and run it just ahead of the caulking tube to warm the surface where the caulking will be placed. Features very quick cure, 1 RTV Neutral Cure silicone, low odor, application temperature down to -20F. Warm the sealant for hrs prior to use.


Warming to room temperature will help to ensure adequate flow of the sealant and its adhesion after application. For exterior applications, they should be applied in temperatures above 40°F, and not when rain or freezing temperatures are forecasted before a full cure can occur. Many sealant contractors employ various methodologies to try and remedy this situation.


Cold weather and high humidity may slow down cure time. Many will wait until the spring to install the organic sealants or switch to silicone. For the daily cold weather caulking application, silicone sealants are the basic no brainer. These sealants typically have longer skin and cure times in the colder, less humid weather. Both items are important for contractors to know before beginning cold weather caulking.

This is our second year in the cold weather , and both years I noticed cracking after freeze and thaw cycles. I check the caulk for cracks at least weekly, and just noticed a lot of cracking after a freeze thaw cycle. Also, there is water dripping from the trim at the joint between the bottom formed fiberglass and nose piece. Seal your gutter even when its cold.
