Modified thinset

To help strengthen thinset, Henry Rothberg invented a synthetic form of latex to be added to the thinset, thereby kickstarting the whole segment of modified thinsets. They are ideal for mosaic, small or medium-sized tile installations on walls, floors or countertops. Selecting the proper polymer- modified thin-set mortar for tile installation will add years of life to your new flooring. Fortified Thin-Set Mortar is a professional formula, all-purpose mortar, polymer- modified to provide good bond strengths. Any thinset that does not contain these is an unmodified thinset.

VersaBond cures quickly and adheres to most surfaces. This post began as a description and information on unmodified thinsets and which are better. Obviously, modified thinset is the better option, and all this debate is useless. Before you can decide between modified or unmodified thinset, you need to ensure that you understand their strengths and weaknesses, their applications, and when it’s best to use one versus the other.

The membrane bonds to the plywood with latex- modified thinset, and then the tile beds to the membrane with dry-set mortar—different mortar on each side of the membrane. And be aware that the installation process may be different for different types of membrane, so manufacturers’ requirements have to be followed for the product to be warrantied. The additional polymers are introduced in either liquid or powder form. In the first case, the user mixes an unmodified or dry-set mortar powder with a liquid polymer additive instead of water. It is the first thinset mortar developed (no, it was not engineered specifically for Schluter products).

Modified thinset

Thinset for laying porcelain tile on Ditra. An un- modified mortar is simply a thin-set mortar that does not contain polymer in the dry mix. A modified thin-set mortar contains polymers formulated into the dry mix that increase its performance and strength. Tile set by the thinset method is adhered to the substrate with a thin layer of thinset cement. The terms thinset cement, thinset mortar, dryset mortar, and drybond mortar are synonymous.

If you find a thinset you are curious about, and it is not on this list, look for that number. For instance, if it says on the bag that the product meets ANSI standards A118. Since Schlutter systems act as a vapor barrier, they make it very difficult for modified thinset to properly cure. Shop mapei porcelain 50-lb gray powder thinset mortar in the mortar section of Lowes. LvjzO Shipping is included in that price which is about $more than you would spend at a supply for it.

The latex fortified thin set mortars provide a longer working time, and adjustability time. Get tech, info from the manufacturer. How would any of those things he listed mean he should have no trouble setting tile. Everything You Need for Tiling. Unmodified thinset is a thinset that has no polymers added to it, a modified thinset is a thinset that has either polymers added to the powder during manufacturing, or an unmodified thinset that.

USG states that non- modified thinset should be used to set the tiles (12×porcelain in my case) because this backer board is impervious. I assume it would take quite a long time for the modified thinset to cure. I understand that modified thinset need air to cure so USG does not recommend its use. Technically thin set is a type of mortar. So all thin set is mortar, but not all mortar is thin set.

Modified thinset

Thin set uses finer sand as the aggregate. Designed to use in relatively thin layers (thin mortar beds) hence the name thin set. Brick mortar is a coarser type of mortar.

It has larger particles of sand and even small pebbles. Adding polymer to traditional mortars offers improved workability, adhesion and curing performance. It also makes the mortar suitable for use as a thin set mortar, as the added strength allows for a thinner layer of mortar to be effective.

One downside sometimes mentioned in the mastic vs. There’s a newer tile adhesive introduced to the market that falls into the mastic family, some of them make claims that might end up causing you damage down the road. With some uncoupling membranes, you may actually need to use both types of thinset if you are going over a plywood substrate. The better question should be should I use modified or unmodified thinset.

I will have to disagree and say mastic adhesive should not be used in shower areas. It should not be used on large format tile as mastic needs air to cure and once wet turns to playdoe. You can also mix this additive into unmodified thinset. One school of thought is the wood wicks out the water from the thinset reducing the ability for it to wet cure resulting in a weaker bond. The other school says that the latex in modified thinset is a bonding agent.

Modified thinset

Modified is usually called for over plywood or OSB. This thin-set was specificaly made to be used both over and under Ditra and Kerdi products. Therefore, extended cure times would be required before grouting if using modified thin-set mortars between DITRA and ceramic tile, including porcelain tile. If extended cure times were not observe the could be unpredictable.

Merkrete 7Thin Set is a professional grade polymer modified Portland. It is recommended for use in the thin set installation method for absorptive, semi-vitreous and vitreous tile over properly prepared masonry, concrete, and cement backer board. Buy thin sets and adhesives for installing ceramic tiles and natural stone.

We also have cement mortar, such as mud beds, and thin sets.
