Wipe on varnish

The answer is wiping varnish. It’s a versatile finish that is thin enough to wipe on, but dries hard even when applied in thicker coats. This allows me to build the finish quickly, then end with a thin coat. Can you apply wipe -on poly over a varnished surface without stripping the varnish off? I have kitchen cabinets that were finished with varnish years ago and would like to put a more durable finish like Minwax wipe -on poly.


The problems with water-based wipe on poly are that chalk paint soaks it up like a sponge – so to get a clean smooth finish your going to want to dilute it with water. I use a 50: ratio for water and wipe on poly. Using a wiping varnish would speed up your finish process. Ron- The Arm-R-Seal is a wiping varnish itself. The key is the wiping , rubbing off the oil completely.
