How to apply tung oil

The Tung Oil will seal the wood and prevent penetration of the stain. You should use an oil based stain because water base is just going to sit. DO NOT put tung oil on your guitar. It will dampen the vibrations of the sound and negatively affect the tone quality. Depends on what type of laminate it was put on.


If it was raw wood then some of the tung oil would have penetrated it and that part will not be removable. You may also find that the Tung oil you used was not true Tung oil often the term. Tung oil is a type of natural drying oil commonly used as a finish in woodworking projects. When applied to a raw surface, the oil hardens to protect and add luster to the wood.


After sanding and cleaning the wood surface to remove any previous finish, spread the oil along the grain pattern using a clean, lint-free rag. Tung oil can only be applied to bare surfaces or over another coat of tung oil. Follow that up by cleaning the surface with trisodium phosphate.


Sand the surface one more time with 150-grit sandpaper, and then vacuum well to remove all dust. A thinner will make the tung oil easier to apply , faster to dry, and will improve penetration. To get the maximum protection, apply coats of full-strength tung oil but you can always apply more. I applied more coats until the oil was not penetrating into the wood after letting it sit. As an optional step, you can thin the first coat of tung oil by oil to mineral spirits.

The piece that I am finishing in this video has already had a danish oil finish applied to it, which will remain under the tung oil. Tung oil is dead easy to use , builds well, dries quickly, and produces a durable, clear finish with contrast and depth. The oil is extracted from the nut of the tung tree, native to China but also grown in South America. Note: If buffing is difficult, recoat surface immediately and buff.

Now comes the finish which gives a wet look to wood. Paint and varnish makers use the oil finishes because it penetrates deep into the wood surfaces. First, thin the tung oil using part oil to parts mineral spirits or turpentine.


Wipe the tung oil mixture over a smoothly sande bare wood such as teak, mahogany or other fine-grained hardwood. Wipe the excess oil off the woo wait minutes and wipe off any oil drops that may appear. Tung oil , like linseed oil , penetrates superbly without thinning. Soak wood with it full strength, and it will absorb more evenly and be saturated in one application. Wait at least hours after you apply the oil -based wood stain before applying a tung oil topcoat.

If you want to create a high shine, buff the last coat with a fine steel-wool pad. Wipe clean and buff with a soft buffing cloth. You can use tung oil as a sealer prior to applying the wood stain and as a topcoat.
