Ship lath siding

Ship Lap Siding is a type of Drop Lap siding with a tight flush joint profile. Exterior siding made of authentic exotic hardwood is known to outlast and outperform cedar and other wood siding options. The reason for such excellent performance is simple. But today it has become very popular in creating a rustic style in contemporary elements as often seen in Fixer Upper with Chip and Joanna Gaines.


Here, a portion of shiplap wood siding has been uncovere painted white and framed to elegantly extend the fireplace mantel. This siding was initially used on the sides of wooden ships to keep them watertight. Ideally, the shiplap siding should be stored in an enclosed building such as a garage prior to use. At least, not the real shiplap with the square rabbeted edges like I wanted.

Turning standard planks into shiplap siding is a simple process. The shiplap is formed by cutting a rabbet into opposite faces of the top and bottom of each plank. We are lucky to have it in our Seattle home on the ceilings with heavy beams that have all been painted or pickled in shades of blue or gray. In our bathrooms we added wainscoting on the lower to continue the ship -like feel.

I’d like to ask you if I need to put horizontal lath strips. Weathertight shiplap (or ship lap) has long been popular in areas of harsh climates. Tongue and groove siding tends to lay flatter against the building.
