Hemlock fence boards in my neck of the woods is by and large full of “knots” because it is milled from the outside of the tree and or is from low grade fast grown “tree farms”. Which severally compromises its structural integrity, uses and demand. It is pale in color and naturally richens over time. It looks great rough sawn. It is resistant to rotting and it is also much less expensive than douglas fir for timber frame homes.


I was not sure what section to ask this question, but here it goes. As to shake, it is usually an obvious defect. Regarding certification, an engineer can certify the structural integrity of hemlock.


Hemlock is very strong, has a long grain and is a renewable resource. I would either wrap the wood at the end with plastic , poly or treat the end before pouring cement around it.
