Spray polycrylic

Some say you cannot spray polycrylic finish with a HVLP spray gun. So I did the research, and then gave it a shot. Watch this tutorial on how it can be done! Short vid showing ONE way to spray water based finish. It is environmentally friendly, and you can use it indoors.

Uncured polycrylic cleans up with soap and water. Polycrylic is water soluble, nonflammable and odor free. It is available in high gloss and satin finishes.


It can be applied with a spray bottle or roller. It offers protection of wood along with faster drying times. It adds beauty to interior wood pieces such as furniture, woodwork, doors and cabinets. You should be able to spray the polycrylic as is.


I spray it with my Rockler HVLP gun and coats with 2grit in between and I get some. So, I sprayed it lightly with the polycrylic spray as a way to help it blend and it worked beautifully filling in the slight differences in the sheen. The spray is a great tool for perfecting the finish, but also works well on furniture legs and hard to reach places. Spray on the polycrylic with slightly overlapping strokes and apply a thin layer to avoid any runs or snags. If you are working with unsealed woo ensure you use enough to seal any open joints and edges.

As polycrylic is a lot runnier, its application may get a lot more challenging. You need to apply really thing coats, making sure that you have no dripping. Wait to dry so that you don’t obtain a sticky and unpleasant finish. While the polycrylic was just a little tacky (mostly dry) I sprayed it lightly with the mixture and wiped it down with a clean clothe.
