Inside drywall corners can develop hairline cracks that over time can grow larger and visible through your paint, so it’s important to take a few precautionary steps during drywall installation to prevent these cracks. Leah from See Jane Drill demonstrates how to tape perfect drywall corners , using a corner trowel. A good system for taping and mudding inside corners improves the look of every room and saves time. Applying mud ( drywall joint compound) and tape to an inside corner is difficult because it often involves blending three corners , like where the inside corner of a wall meets the ceiling.

Metal-reinforced drywall tape can be folded lengthwise for use along inside or outside wall corners. Rigi pre-formed drywall corners can also be used at inside wall corners. Use a 4-inch-wide drywall knife to spread joint compound along each wall on either side of an inside corner.

I have a method for inside corners that provides near professional. It involves a few more steps however than what some others may show you. The steps shown on this page are for a regular 90-degree inside corner. Use a roll of paper drywall tape to finish inside corners , not fiberglass mesh.


Start by cutting a piece of tape a little longer than each corner to be finished. Inside drywall corners are a bit more difficult to finish than flat seams, and an inexperienced worker may fail to spread enough mud or to sufficiently scrape the tape. I watched some videos, and read a few articles online about how to properly finish inside corners. The process goes something like this.

Drywall screws Around the area that is damage take the taping knife and scrape out about a 1” or 2” of the dry wall. You will need to get down to the corner bead. Now, hammer the corner back together again.

You may need to use the drywall screws to keep the corners together. Outside drywall corners have traditionally been protected with nail-on metal corners , but paper-faced corner bead is simpler and resists cracks and chips better. Apply the mixed mud to the exposed area. All you need to install it are taping knives and a spray bottle filled with water. The question is whether or not to tape the four inside corners in the opening.


I think taping would strengthen the joint, but any movement would probably crack the corner. Considering just butting the pieces together in the corners and caulking with a fairly flexible caulk. Score along the edge of the bead about 1¼” back from the corner. Pry the corner bead off the wall. For inside corners , use a 6-inch drywall knife to feather the compound along one side only. You’ll do the other side on the third coat.


The rigid steel-reinforced inside corners provide a durable guide to achieve exceptionally straight and sharp inside corners. Sand inside corners with corner sanding block. Sand all other surfaces using a pole sander with medium-grit abrasive. Smooth both sides of inside corners at once with an inside corner knife. Scrape off the ridges with a taping knife.


It takes a steady hand to embed tape in inside corners with a standard drywall knife. Use an inside - corner knife to smooth the drywall compound. Hold the knife at a slight angle to the corner.


Paper tape is best for the inside of 90-degree corners if the corner is straight and true. To repair a large hole, first draw a square around it. Certainteed makes a product called Levelline, which is a paper-faced vinyl corner tape.


It works best for drywall corners that are not straight or that are at less than a 90-degree angle.
